About Sakana fiber optic
Who are we?
The objective of the project is to deploy a shared telecommunications network to bring Internet access through fiber optics to any home, business or operation in the municipalities of Sakana that have currently joined the initiative, which are: Arakil, Arbizu, Arruazu, Etxarri-Aranatz, Irañeta, Irurtzun, Lakuntza and Uharte-Arakil.
What is a shared network?
Unlike conventional models, where the network is owned by a single operator who deploys and operates it at the same time, a shared network is an infrastructure that is used as a common good: it belongs to all those actors who have invested in it and use it. In addition, it is managed through a series of mechanisms that ensure and prevent anyone from appropriating it, as is the case with the management of communal meadows or forests.
This model has advantages such as:
-
Having an open, free and neutral network.
-
Sharing the same network with multiple operators (monopoly is avoided).
-
It is more environmentally sustainable because infrastructure is not duplicated.
-
Costs are reduced.
-
Users can choose from different commercial operators.
-
Preventing the infrastructure from being used for profit.
